Black Syracuse Professor Says Sean Bell Supporters Should Be Balanced in Perspective

Syracuse, NY (PRWEB) April 28, 2008 -- A prominent Syracuse University Professor has stepped in to comment on the Sean Bell case in New York. Sean Bell, a black man, was shot 50 times the night before his wedding.

This week, all officers involved in the shooting were acquitted of all charges. Dr. Boyce Watkins, who speaks regularly on issues related to black men, has called for African-Americans to focus on the critical issues of the case, not those issues that lie on the surface.

Dr. Watkins, who worked with Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson on the Jena Six and Don Imus cases, has stated that African-Americans should remember that the issue of fair justice is much bigger than Sean Bell.

"The tendency is to focus on one case and assume that the guilt or innocence of these particular officers is the critical issue," says Watkins, author of "What if George Bush were a Black Man?" "The reality is that the officers may or may not have had a justifiable use of force in this case. So, their guilt or innocence is secondary in the bigger picture."

Dr. Watkins, whose father was in law enforcement for 25 years, says that there are multiple factors to consider when analyzing the Sean Bell case.

"First of all, we must keep in mind is that most officers are good people like the rest of us and have no desire to hurt anyone if they don't have to. None of us knows what happened that night. At the same time, black anger is justified because we have been given no reason to trust the criminal justice system. For 400 years, the police department has been used as a tool for black oppression."

Dr.Watkins, who is working with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Dr. Marc Lamont Hill to attack the high drop out rate for black males, says that protests should proceed, but the underlying problems with the criminal justice system must be kept in mind.

"One never hears about white women or college students being shot in questionable circumstances, only black men. The reality is that officers may feel more comfortable using deadly force against black men and the poor. This may be due to the fact that they are more likely to get away with it and black men are considered to be more frightening. There is work to be done."

Dr. Boyce Watkins is the first African-American Finance Professor in the history of Syracuse University. He is also the founder of the popular website, YourBlackWorld.com. For more information, please call (315) 935-9961 or email info @ boycewatkins.com.
